We have some distressing news to share. Our patient Manuel has passed away in Australia, only hours before his scheduled surgery.
We are desperately sad for Manuel's family and friends. Our commitment to them is to honour Manuel by redoubling our efforts to identify and assist patients and help tackle the root causes of poor heart health in Timor-Leste.
Please join us in mourning Manuel as we work toward a future for Timor-Leste that is free from the devastating impacts of untreated heart disease.

Vale Manuel Ximenes
All of us at East Timor Hearts Fund extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of our patient Manuel Ximenes, who has tragically passed away following complications arising from his critical heart disease.
As a result of his heart tumour and associated medical conditions, Manuel was gravely ill when he arrived in Australia late last month. He was immediately admitted at University Hospital Geelong, where he received the best of medical care provided by our partner Barwon Health, as well as support from our volunteer team.
Sadly, just hours before his scheduled surgery, Manuel’s condition deteriorated rapidly. He passed away peacefully in his sleep, with nursing staff by his side.
Our profound sympathies go to Manuel’s wife, Josefa, his five children and his extended family and friends.
In life and death as our patient Manuel has been treated with care and respect, in keeping with Timorese tradition and his Catholic faith. We have worked as quickly as possible to return Manuel to Timor-Leste and his family. This week an East Timor Hearts Fund representative will escort Manuel back to his village and personally convey our condolences to his family.
