We are extraordinarily proud to announce the Governor-General of Australia, Sir Peter Cosgrove, as our new Patron. Sir Peter, a hero to many in Timor-Leste and Australia due to his leadership of the INTERFET peacekeeping force in 1999-2000, joins our first patron, "the Father of Timor-Leste", His Excellency Xanana Gusmão.
We are enormously honoured to have individuals of this calibre lend their support to our work.
Sir Peter's statement is below, and you can also find out more on the patron's page of our website.
A message from our Patron, Sir Peter Cosgrove
I am very proud to support the work of East Timor Hearts Fund.
Timor-Leste is a cause that is close to my heart. In 1999-2000 I commanded the International Task Force East Timor, which played a central role in this emerging nation’s transition to independence. I have taken a keen interest in our neighbour’s development since.
As someone who has seen a key moment in the struggle for independence in Timor-Leste first-hand, I am particularly impressed with the ethos of East Timor Hearts Fund. The Fund is delivering critical care for patients who need it today, while also working collaboratively with local people and institutions to support the development of a strong health system for the people of Timor-Leste for tomorrow.
East Timor Hearts Fund’s work is immeasurably important.
His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Ret'd)
Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia
