Heart surgery requires a unique set of skills, and our volunteer medical team and the keen staff at Dili's Hospital Nacional Guido Valadares (HNGV) are more than willing to share knowledge during this week's Operation GoodHearts.
Throughout surgical procedures, local medical staff from HNGV observe and assist our surgical team. For our team, seeing local staff interested in learning has been a really positive experience.
“I was honoured to spend time with the local nursing staff in theatre teaching them basic knowledge about how the heart works, why we’re here and what we’re doing and what impact it will have and how – building up the knowledge so that they can better look after all the patients they see," said Dr. Ari.
Dr. Ines said working alongside the team from East Timor Hearts Fund has been great for her and the team, especially in clinics.
"It's been very good to observe and learn from each other. It's very helpful and beneficial for the local Doctors who learn from them (and observe) how they do examinations and for them to see how we run the clinic," she said.
Our work supporting the health system in Timor-Leste is important as we work towards a vision of eventually seeing patients with complex heart conditions being able to receive treatment by local surgeons in local hospitals.
